Also present were representatives from the schools’ Parent-Teacher Association, District Police and District Education Department. The 12-page booklet, which was officially launched jointly with the Ministry of Education and the PDRM, contains a series of dos and don’ts that children can follow to ensure their own safety when out of sight of their parents, guardians or teachers. The tips are in two languages – English and Bahasa Malaysia – and illustrated with caricatures to make it more attractive to young children. A total of 150,000 copies of the booklet have already been distributed to 170 primary schools in urban areas across the country. “In this day and age when crime is growing increasingly rampant, it’s essential to teach our children the importance of their own safety and wellbeing. They are never too young to learn how to protect themselves, because no matter how much we try to be there for them there could always be that one time when circumstances could be beyond our control,” said En Akmal Baqi Mohamed Ariff, Head of Group Corporate Communications, RHB Banking Group. This effort to create awareness amongst children is part of the RHB Banking Group’s Corporate Responsibility programme called “Missing Children – Reuniting Families” that was launched in collaboration with the PDRM on 23 July 2007. Under the Corporate Responsibility programme, RHB Banking Group will use its resources, specifically its network of about 180 branches nationwide, to disseminate information about missing children by distributing leaflets and posters. The advertisements in the newspapers also come under this endeavour. The philosophy of the Corporate Responsibility programme is to create and instil positive social values that not only to the Group’s employees, but to the society as a whole. The programme also seeks to embark on initiatives that will have a positive impact on the community at large transcending cultural and religious differences. En Akmal added, “It has been a great nine months, being able to go to all these schools and reach out to the children this way. We are currently planning the next phase of our Corporate Responsibility programme and we intend to bring it to greater heights.” This visit marked the end of the Group’s Corporate Responsibility Phase 1. The roadshow was launched in February 2008, and included visits to Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Kota Kinabalu, Penang, Johor Bahru and Kuching. The RHB Banking Group seeks to take on further initiatives to promote children’s safety in the near future. Issued by Group Corporate Communications, RHB Capital Bhd.
