Johor Bahru, 12 March 2007: A total of 120 employees of the RHB Banking Group exchanged their laptops, PCs and PDAs for brooms, cangkul and paintbrushes last Saturday – all for a good cause – “PROJEK KASIH”.

These financial services executives, led by Chairman of Rashid Hussain Bhd (“RHB”), Dato’ Paduka Nik Hashim Nik Yusoff, spent the day cleaning up the village, which was one of the worst hit in the floods that denuded large parts of Johor and other states recently. They also helped repaint the village surau, which was damaged in the floods.

The penghulu of Kampung Kolam Air, Encik Mukayen Ramlan, said a total of 250 residents living in 19 homes in the village were affected by the floods. “In some of the homes, the water level rose more than two metres. Apart from the damage caused to their homes, these people also lost most of their household items,” he said.

The village has a total of 52 families, but the others, whose homes were located on higher ground, escaped the deluge.

Dato’ Paduka Nik Hashim, together with the State Assemlyman for Machap, YB Datuk Abdul Hamid Abdul Rahman, later presented cheques of RM1,000 each to the 19 families affected by the floods.

The project kicked-off with money raised by employees of the RHB Banking Group who passed the hat around. The sum collected by the employees was later topped up by RHB Banking Group to RM37,000.

Apart from the donations to the affected villagers, the money was also used to pay the cost of rebuilding the surau and other structures damaged in the floods.

The gotong-royong activity was also witnessed by YB Tuan Haji Onn Mohd Yassin, State Assemblyman for Layang-Layang.

This is the second such effort by the Group to assist those hit by the recent floods. In January, RHB Banking Group donated a total of RM100,000 to the flood victims through the NSTP Flood Victims Assistance Fund.

The mentioned initiatives are examples of RHB Banking Group’s active participation as a caring corporate citizen in the Corporate Social Responsibility arena.
