RHB ISLAMIC donates ambulance worth RM160,000 for Malaysian pilgrims

Kuala Lumpur, 29 November 2007: Malaysian pilgrims performing the Haj this year can now rest assured that they will be able to get medical attention quickly in the event of illness or injury, thanks to RHB ISLAMIC Bank Bhd ("RHB ISLAMIC"). The bank has donated a new ambulance costing RM160,000 to Lembaga Tabung Haji (LTH) to complement the pilgrims board's operations in Mecca.

RHB ISLAMIC Managing Director Puan Jamelah Jamaluddin said the bank would extend the funds to LTH through its Haj Consulate in Jeddah. The consulate will utilize the money to purchase a GMC Savana van and undertake to convert the van into a fully functional ambulance.

"We are pleased to be able to play a role in providing the necessary assistance to fellow Malaysians in times of need, particularly when they are in a foreign environment," she said.

She noted that for many people, especially the aged as well as those who are travelling for the first time, staying for long periods in an unfamiliar environment posed a significant challenge.

"The change in climate, environment and other factors can sometimes cause difficulties, including health problems," she said.

"With such a large number of visitors to the Holy Land during the Haj season, getting the proper medical attention would, by itself, be a major challenge."

"While some common ailments can be treated on site, more serious illnesses may require admission to a hospital. With an ambulance on standby, we can ensure that those who need such medical attention can be quickly sent to the hospital."

"From our observation too, we realise that some pilgrims, because of the state of their health, can only move around in an ambulance. If there are not enough ambulances to ferry these pilgrims to Arafah, some of them may miss the Haj. With this addition to the fleet of ambulances, we believe we can ensure that more pilgrims can make the trip to Arafah to perform the Wukuf," she added.

Datuk Azlan Zainol, Director of RHB Capital Bhd, said "this is not the first time that RHB Banking Group has extended its assistance and support to LTH through its Sahabat Korporat Tabung Haji programme".

"We hope that with the ambulance that we have contributed, LTH will be able to provide even better service to Malaysian pilgrims," he added.

This latest initiative by RHB ISLAMIC is part of the RHB Banking Group's Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme. The Group has undertaken several CSR initiatives, chief amongst which is the Missing Children - Reuniting Families programme. Under this programme, the banking group works closely with the police to help disseminate information about missing children in an effort to more quickly trace them so that they can be reunited with their families.

RHB ISLAMIC is part of the RHB Banking Group, one of the largest financial services groups in Malaysia. It has been recognised internationally as one of the more innovative Islamic banking institutions that offer products and services that best meet customers' needs.
