RHB Banking Group sets up RM10 million loan fund to help flood victims

Kuala Lumpur, 13 December 2007: The RHB Banking Group has set aside a total of RM10 million in a loan programme to help those who have been hit by the floods that have inundated vast areas in Pahang, Kelantan, Johor and Sarawak.

Under the programme the flood victims will be offered quick loans on easy repayment to help them finance the reconstruction of their homes or to purchase household essentials which have been damaged in the floods.

This makes the RHB Banking Group the first financial services provider to offer aid to the victims of the floods this year. This is also the second time that the Group has extended a helping hand to flood victims.

In February this year, the RHB Banking Group set up a RM10 million loan fund under a similar scheme called the RHB Flood Relief Personal Financing Programme.

Chairman of RHB Bank Bhd (“RHB Bank”) Datuk Azlan Zainol said the programme was a “commitment by the RHB Banking Group to our customers in areas where we serve that have been hit by the floods”.

Since the floods, brought by the North-East Monsoon, first hit the East Coast states last month, more than 20,000 people have been evacuated from their homes. To date, the floods have claimed the lives of 12 people.

While the floods have receded in some areas in Negri Sembilan and Terengganu, and the victims have been able to return home, the situation in Johor, Kelantan, Pahang and Sarawak have either remained the same or have turned worse.
