RHB Banking Group launches Booklet on Crime Prevention for Children

Kuala Lumpur, 19 February 2008:The RHB Banking Group took its CSR (corporate social responsibility) initiative for children another step further with the launching of a booklet with crime prevention tips today.

The booklet, entitled Crime Prevention Tips for Kids, is the result of efforts by the banking group with the cooperation and guidance of the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) and sanctioned by the Ministry of Education.

"This is our effort to help make children more aware of the dangers of their surroundings, particularly when they are on the way to school or waiting to be picked up after school," said Datuk Azlan Zainol, Chairman of RHB Bank Bhd and Director of RHB Capital Bhd.

"With an increasing incidence of young children being abducted, we feel that this is the least we can do to help protect our young ones. After all, it is every person's responsibility to create a safe environment for our children," he added.

The booklet was official launched jointly with the Ministry of Education and the PDRM. Representing the ministry was its Director of Schools Division Haji Zulkifly Mohd Wazir while the PDRM was represented by the Director of its Criminal Investigation Department Dato' Mohd Bakri Mohd Zinin.

The 12-page booklet, in a handy B5 size that can easily fit into a schoolbag, contains a series of dos and don'ts that children can follow to ensure their own safety when out of sight of their parents, guardians or teachers.

The tips are in two languages - English and Malay - and illustrated with caricatures to make it more attractive to young children. A total of 150,000 copies of the booklet have already been distributed to 170 primary schools in urban centres across the country.

The booklet is part of the RHB Banking Group's Missing Children - Reuniting Families CSR initiative that was launched in July last year in collaboration with the PDRM.

Under this initiative, the banking group acts as an alternative channel for the flow of information on children who have been reported missing from home.

Following today's event, the RHB Banking Group will embark on a roadshow to primary schools in six urban centres around the country. Apart from the Klang Valley, the other centres covered are Johor Baru, Penang, Kuantan, Kota Kinabalu and Kuching.

The RHB Banking Group will engage the assistance of the Education Department and Police in these respective cities to ensure that the schoolchildren receive the maximum benefits from this initiative.

"Children will be given a short presentation on the contents of the booklet, and how best they can make use of the advice given, in the hope that they will not only learn about the various dangers in their environment, but also be able to take the necessary steps to avoid any untoward incidents," Datuk Azlan said.

He also noted that following the RHB Banking Group initiative other parties, from within the corporate sector as well as among NGOs, have also now come forward to assist in locating missing children, also by distributing flyers and displaying posters.

Datuk Azlan pointed out that while the banking group would make every effort to help locate missing children, it was more essential that incidence of children being lost or abducted be prevented altogether.

"Hence our effort in inculcating in children the need to ensure that they do not fall victims to criminal elements. We hope that with this booklet, children will learn how best to protect themselves,' he added.
